Become a Conference Volunteer

Volunteering Opportunities

Volunteering is open to all undergraduate or graduate students at the University of South Carolina.

The USC Big Data Health Science Center is seeking volunteers to help make its 5th National Big Data Health Science Conference a success. Volunteering will allow you to build your network by working behind the scenes at a national conference. Your engagement will also earn you free registration to the conference (if volunteers commit an entire volunteer block they will receive free registration, allowing them access to sessions and networking opportunities).

Expectations

Volunteers are expected to provide assistance during at least one volunteer block during the conference. Given that volunteers are the face of the National Big Data Health Science Conference, they are expected to be punctual, respectful, and helpful during their shifts. Volunteers will be also expected to keep their volunteer leader informed of any issues and help keep the conference programming on the right track. In particular, we are seeking volunteers to provide assistance in the following key areas of the conference:

Registration

Volunteers will be responsible for welcoming attendees, maintaining the registration roster sheet, distributing registration materials, and answering questions. Volunteers will also assist new attendees with on-site registration.

App Monitor

Volunteers will be responsible for monitoring the conference app, Whova. If attendees post questions to the app discussion forum, volunteers will provide answers. Volunteers will moderate decorum on discussion forums.

Room Monitor

Volunteers will assist speakers during their presentations, keep track of time, and monitor the traffic in and out of the room once the session has begun. Room monitors will help the organizers run each session smoothly.

Poster Monitors

Volunteers will be responsible for the requests from poster presenters such as putting up the posters to the boards. Volunteers will be also expected to answer directional/basic questions by attendees of the poster session.

Traffic Direction

Volunteers will be responsible for providing directions to attendees throughout the conference. Volunteers will answer questions attendees have regarding session locations, the conference schedule, the conference venue, and the conference app.

Case Competition

Volunteers will assist with a time slot at the Annual Student Case Competition (held prior to the conference on January 26-28, 2024). Volunteers will assist virtually to help the competition run smoothly.

Volunteer Blocks

There are a total of four blocks of time for which volunteers are needed. Committing to an entire block will earn you free registration for the conference. Blocks include:

Case Competition (virtual):

1) Saturday, January 27th (12:00pm-5:30pm)

2) Sunday, January 28th (8:30am-1:30pm)

Conference (in person):

(1) Friday, February 2nd AM (7:30am-12:30pm)

(3) Saturday, February 3rd AM (7:30am-12:30pm)

(4) Saturday February 3rd PM (12:30pm-5:30pm)
